Photo Guidelines for Obituaries

Best Type of Photo

• Choose a clear, well-lit photo of the person.
• Head-and-shoulders photos usually reproduce best.
• Avoid screenshots, photos of printed pictures, or heavily filtered social media images whenever possible.
• Older photos are welcome, but higher-quality originals produce better results.

Recommended File Formats

Please submit photos in one of the following formats:

• JPG / JPEG (preferred)
• PNG
• TIFF (high quality)

Avoid These Common Problems

Photos may appear blurry, grainy, or distorted if they are:

• Screenshots from phones or Facebook
• Downloaded from social media
• Cropped too tightly
• Sent through apps that compress images
• Very small files, under 200 KB

How to Submit the Best Quality

• Send the original image directly from your phone or camera whenever possible.
• Avoid taking a picture of a printed photograph with another phone.
• If scanning a printed photo, scan at 300 DPI or higher.
• Email attachments generally preserve better quality than text messaging.

Color vs. Black & White

• Color photos are accepted and often preferred for online presentation.
• Photos may appear in grayscale in print depending on placement and layout.

Editing & Cropping

• Minor cropping or adjustments may be made by our staff to fit print and online formats.
• Extremely dark, blurry, or damaged photos may not reproduce well in print.
